From Pads To Palette - Ernie Barnes was born July 15, 1938. Endowed with an innate sensitivity, he knew early in life that he wanted to become an artist. Initial impressions were fashioned in the rich soil of Durham, North Carolina, while his sensibilities were cultivated in a loving home by his parents, Ernest Sr. and Fannie (Geer) Barnes. As a child, he often accompanied his mother to the home of the prominent attorney, Frank Fuller, Jr., where she worked as a domestic. Former NFL player Ernie Barnes lends insight and understanding into preconceived notions about aggression and issues of sensitivity. In his first published account, Barnes chronicles his childhood in segregated Durham, North Carolina, through his successful pro football career, to his debut solo exhibition at a prestigious gallery in Manhattan, New York. Paul Tagliabue, NFL Commissioner: "Ernie Barnes is an excellent example to our current players that there is life after football. We in the NFL family are pleased that Ernie is recognized as one of the leading artists of our day."
