notes*: Inspiration: Prometheus; in Greek Mythology, gave humanity Civilization and the Arts, which angered Jupiter. Jupiter had Prometheus chained to a rock on Mt. Caucasus; where a vulture preyed on his liver, which was renewed as fast as devoured. This state of torment might have been brought to an end if Prometheus had been willing to submit to his oppressor, but he refused to do so. Thereby making Prometheus the symbol of endurance of unmerited suffering and strength of will resisting oppression. This painting is influenced after Peter Paul Rubens’ “Prometheus Bound” 1611-1612.
