notes*: Beat Break Fever In the late 60s and early 70s, hip-hop DJs began using a new technique. The part of a funk or jazz song in which the music “breaks” to let the Rhythm section play unaccompanied repeats several times in a row to create the rhythmic basis for hip-hop songs. As an infectious fever spread, B-boys and B-Girls would hit the dance floor and let the beat take control. Eventually, the pattern of breaks would become a foundation for pioneer and modern emcees. “Break Beat Fever” represents how a simple break beat helped create a revolution known as hip-hop, and inspire a new generation of millions around the world.
